The Three Pieces for Cello Solo by Ben-Haim are conceived as a sort of sonata, with many elements of near-eastern folklore, cast in western techniques. The outstanding qualities are great lyrical expressiveness, declamatory improvisatory statements and dense rhythmic texture. The work was dedicated to Uzi Wiesel as a “token of gratitude for his outstanding premiere performance of my Cello Concerto of 1962” (Ben-Haim).
